The history of the Masquerade ball spans many cultures and eras.
The basic concept was for those attending to conceal their identities so that they could attract a mate based primarily on personality rather than on physical beauty.
There was an aura of mystery and excitement as the party goers were able to act themselves and use their charms to attract a suitor.
At the end of the ball the masks were removed and identities were revealed.
People got to know each other in a much less superficial way.
In our day and time, our masquerade is the computer.  People can be anything they want to be behind the computer screen.
Sometimes this can have positive consequences and sometimes not.
The freedom to be yourself without revealing your true identity to a stranger is comforting to some.
